Jolicloud, now to be called simply Joli OS, has launched Google Docs integration, letting users view text, spreadsheet, and presentation documents stored in their Google Docs account using the Jolicloud file browser. You can also preview and edit any files stored in your account, and view other, non-document files uploaded to your account.

The service should be available for all users now, but you’ll need to link your Jolicloud account to Google Docs to use the new feature. You can find out how at the Jolicloud blog.

Jolicloud is a netbook operating system that blurs the lines between your hard drive and the cloud.  It lets you “install” shortcuts on your home screen to web apps for services like Gmail, Facebook, or Picnik just as easily as installing native apps like Skype or GIMP.   Now, the OS formerly known as Jolicloud wants to be known simply as ‘Joli OS’  and more than just a name change, there’s also a shift in focus.

Over the past few years, the Jolicloud team has broadened the operating system’s hardware support so that it now runs on desktop computers and full sized laptops just as well as it runs on netbooks.  Also, they’re moving even forther away from the desktop OS by putting some of the operating system in the cloud. If you have a Jolicloud account you can login and view your desktop from any supported web browser.  Even cooler, if you’re not on your own machine, you can login to your Jolicloud environment simply by entering your username and password and clicking on the icons for web apps as if you were using your own system — although native desktop apps like Skype clearly won’t work.

The new Jolibook netbook is already shipping with version 1.1 of the Jolicloud OS, but you can’t actually download the full version of Jolicloud 1.1 to install on your own netbook.  However, that’s about to change since the Jolicloud  team announced on Twitter that it needs a little more work and will launch around December 7th.

Jolicloud is based on Ubuntu Linux and can run most Ubuntu apps including OpenOffice.org, VLC Media Player, Pidgin, and others.  Another of the system’s benefits is its focus on web apps — which you can be intalled with a single click, adding shortcuts to your home screen/application launcher. This lets you run desktop and web apps like GIMP or Picnik with a single click.

The latest Version 1.1 adds support for HD video playback on netbooks with Atom N550 dual core processors, a new HTML5-based user interface, and zippier boot speeds of around 20 seconds or less.

Remember the rumour that Jolicloud was going to make their own netbook? Well, it’s true, and today Techcrunch has more details.  The machine, to be called the Jolibook, is due out at the end of this month.  Unsurprisingly, the netbook will run the Jolicloud 1.1 operating system which is based on Linux and Google’s open source Chromium web browser. It will have a 1.5GHz Intel Atom N550 dual core processor, a 250GB hard drive, and the ability to play 720p HD video.

Jolicloud has posted some information on its website, they say the netbook will run Chromium, Facebook, Spotify, VLC, and Skype apps, among others.  Also, the Jolibook will launch in the UK first!

Tariq Krim, the founder of Jolicloud,  has confirmed that a Jolicloud netbook is in the works to go alongside the Jolicloud OS. Krim shared a few photos on Twitter, showing the netbook and the box it will likely come in.

There’s no further information about the netbook specs, price, or launch date, but he did say the Jolicloud netbook “is real” and more details will be availble soon.

The folks at Jolicloud have posted a summary of new improvements and features included in their latest 1.1 update, It will be available soon for users to tests.

The update should improve battery life and system stability. It also includes drivers for common netbook and low power laptop hardware including the NVIDIA ION graphics chip, Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator, and Intel Poulsbo chip. and the new dual core Intel Atom N550 chip.

Jolicloud 1.0 is now available for download and this time it’s available to anyone.  There are two option – the 1st is a 16MB installer that runs on Windows XP or 7 and downloads and installs the operating system alongside Windows. The second is a 689MB ISO file which you can load on a USB flash drive to install Jolicloud on a computer that doesn’t run Windows.

Jolicloud is available as a free download. Founder Tariq Krim says premium features will be available later this year.

Not ready to install a new OS on your netbook?  Surf over to my.jolicloud.com using the Google Chrome web browser. Then, after creating an account, you can browse through the apps  and even install them to your desktop. When you install Jolicloud on a netbook, your preferences will be carried over and all the apps you install from the web interface will be installed on your computer.

You may have been following Jolicloud’s progress over the paset year or so. Today,, Jolicloud has started allowing beta testers acess to version 1.0 of their netbook OS.  The 1.0 denominator of the OS signifies a big step forward, and the user interface is now completely reworked and built with HTML5.  The entire OS has a uniform look and feel to it, and it’s certainly looking very cohesive and easy to use.  The OS focuses on ease of use, with 1 click install apps from the app store which already has about 700 applications available.

Sascha from Netbook News loaded Jolicloud 1.0 on his Acer Aspire One 533.   He’s dual booting Jolicloud with the originally installed Windows 7 and posted a video overview of Jolicloud 1.0. The entire video is available after the break.

Samsung N210 HD with Jolicloud OS

There’s been an interesting development with Jolicloud netbook operating system today.  Namely, it’s been reported that full 1080p HD video will be supported under the OS with just the new N450 Intel Atom ‘Pinetrail’ processor.  That’s right, no Broadcom HD accelerator, or Nvidia Ion required.  Support, of course, is not just limited to the N450 but also the faster N470 processors.   Both share the GMA 3150 graphics processor, but if you have an older N270 or N280 Atom with GMA500 you’re out of luck.

Specifically, you’ll be able to play 1080p HD video in various file formats (DivX, Xvid, etc) excluding H.264. If you’re after 720p HD video, all formats including H.264 are supported.

Veronica Belmont of Tekzilla review the Jolicloud Netbook OS

Jolicloud, the much anticipated dedicated to Netbooks operating system has been in the works for some time now, and it’s starting to look pretty polished.  We’re sure the extra 4.2 million dollars in funding helped that!  Veronica Belmont, of Tekzilla, does a nice job of giving us an introduction to Jolicloud, and shows off some of it’s functionality.  It’s a great ‘first look’ video.  See it after the break.
