Initially born as a reponse to the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) XO Laptop, Intel’s Classmate design has been around since early 2008, and are designed as durable, relatively low cost machines that are ideal for classroom settings. The earliest models weren’t all that exciting, but over the years Intel has spruced things up with a larger keyboard and touchpad and a touchscreen display and swivel allowing you to use the netbook in tablet mode.

Introduced today at CeBIT 2010, the latest Intel Classmate has a 10.1 inch touchscreen display, a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, along with a rubberized case containing a handle which makes it easy to carry. It also has a resistive touchscreen taht uses a stylus (no multi touch unfortunately). A cool design feature is that the webcam at the top of the display can be rotated, which means you can use it whether the Classmate PC is in tablet or notebook mode.

You can check out a hands-on video of the new Classmate PC fromNetbook News after the break.

Hold on to your hats, faster netbooks are coming. Intel will be formally announcing the Intel Atom N470 processor come Monday. The new Atom N470 processor has a clock speed of 1.83GHz vs 1.66GHz on the N450 processor that’s standard with new Pinetrail netbooks.

There have already been some netbooks announced with the new process, notably the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t and hopefully we’ll see quite a few more. Don’t expect a night and day difference, but the extra .20ghz should help a bit, although it will command a price premium of 20 or 30 quid.

Intel is set to launch its new Pine Trail Atom platform in January and we’ve alraedy heard that the upcoming Intel N450 will clock in at 1.66ghz and the N470 at 1.83ghz. Also, this new breed of Pineview chips, based on the Pinetrail platform, will be smaller, more energy efficient, and will integrate the CPU, graphics, and memory controllers onto a single chip.

Now, we learn via Fudzilla, that Intel will be adding support for DDR3 memory to the Pinetrail platform later in 2010. It’s rumoured that the N450 and N470 netbook processors will debut earlier, possibly in January or February of 2010, but with DDR2 memory initially. The new desktop processors aren’t left out either and the single core Intel Atom D410 and dual core Atom D510 will launch in early 2010 with DDR2 memory, and move to DDR3 like their netbook counterparts.

For instance, there’s the upcoming Intel Atom N470, which Fudzilla says should launch in the first quarter of 2010, possibly in February. While the Atom N450 clocks in at 1.66GHz, the N470 processor will reportedly have a faster clock speed of about 1.83GHz, and a price tag that’s about $20 higher.

Fudzilla also reports that Intel will be adding support for DDR3 memory to its Pine Trail processors later in 2010. Pine Trail chips integrate the CPU, graphics, and memory controllers onto a single chip, which means that you’ll get a new model number when DDR3 support is added. So the single core Intel Atom N450 and N470 processors launched early in 2010 will be updated to N45x and N47x models capable of using faster memory.

Intel is also reportedly adding DDR3 support to its desktop Atom processors, including the single core Intel Atom D410 and dual core Atom D510. At launch, these chips will support DDR2 memory, like their netbook counterparts.

Three new processors are expected. For netbooks, there will be the 1.66GHz Atom N450. For nettops, a dual-core 1.66GHz AtomD510 and a single core Atom D410 , also at 1.66ghz.
Have you ever wondered why netbooks have such a homogeneous makeup – 1.6ghz processor, 160gb, 1gb ram. Sound familiar? Well, there’s a reason for that. In order for Intel to sell you their Atom processors, you have to agree to their terms for the hardware. Today, Fudzilla reports that Intel has revised the specification slightly.

The upcoming next-gen Atom N450 (1.66GHz) is limited to be sold with a maximum of 1GB RAM, but now Intel has allows the faster Atom N470 (1.86GHz), coming in March, to be sold with up to 2gb of RAM. Of course, to many of us this isn’t a big deal, since many netbooks are able to be upgraded to 2gb of RAM after purchase anyway.

There’s been alot of speculation, and false rumour about this new Intel Atom chip, but the timing on this news makes sense since this date coincides pretty neatly with CES 2010.

According to Fudzilla and Blogeee, Intel will launch a new Intel Atom N470 chip during the first quarter of 2010. The new Atom processor gets a speed bump to 1.83ghz – an improvement over the current N280 which runs at 1.66ghz. Like the N280 processor, the new N470 procesor will run a 667MHz FSB. Intel will also release a slower 1.66ghz N450 processor at the same time.

Perhaps the biggest difference of these new N450 and N470 Atom chips is that they have a graphics controller built into the chip, negating the need for an entirely separate graphics controll like on the current N270 and N280 Atom chips. In real terms, this means significant space saving on the board, as well as power savings. The processor and graphics solution on the N450 and N470 chips is said to have a TDP of just 6.5watts.
