Ok, it’s not late May, early June as we thought earlier, but now there’s more definite news that Acer is working on a netbook that will run Google’s Chrome OS. The sleuths at Macles spotted a few details and posted them.

Check out the full details at Macles, but basically someone has been filing some Linux and Google Chrome bug reports related to a previously unannounced Acer laptop. From the reports, it can be determined that the hardware for the upcoming Chrome OS netbook will be:

1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 CPU

1GB of memory

8GB SanDisk pSSD (solid state disk)

Ambient light sensor

WiFi, Bluetooth wireless connectivity

There’s still no word on the pricing or release date, but Macles suspects we could see a release pretty soon, based on the progress of the reports.

Since the very beginning Google has hinted that Acer, HP and Dell would be the first manufacturers to get access to their new custom, browser-based operating system for netbooks. Although that news is from about a year ago, it seems the trio are still in line to debut Chrome OS later this year as Blogger Lee Matthews discovered.

While digging around in the Chrome OS repositories, and he spotted files labeled Acer, Dell, and HP. The files are used to configure hardware support for Chrome OS, so it seems likely that Chrome OS will support devices from each of these companies at launch.

The real question, we think, is whether or not Google will build any hardware themselves. They’ve already proven capable and willing to produce (or at least partner to produce) hardware with the Nexus One smartphone. And then, if they do produce a device, will it be a netbook or a tablet? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Acer Chairman JT Wang was pretty confident they’d be the first out with a Google Chrome OS netbook, although we’re thinking there will be a flood of Chrome OS netbooks in late 2010.

We’ll have to see what Acer has in store for the Chrome OS netbook, but it will certainly have an SSD (Chrome OS requirement) and probably a Pine Trail procecessor.
