Intel's announced CD4100 chip brings 1080p to set top boxes

Intel’s has launched a new Atom chip called the CE4100. It’s architecture is similar to the new pinetrail netbook chips which is a ‘system-on-a-chip’ design with a processor and graphics controller on a single chip. It uses the new 45nm process whcih means it’s the new low power Atom processor core.

The CE4100 is designed to for set top boxes, designed to record television (DVR) or playback on demand content streaming from the internet. The CE4100 runs at clock speeds up to 1.2GHz and has FSB speeds of 200MHz to 400MHz and can support playback of 2 simultaneous 1080p video streams which is useful if you want to watch a stream while recording another. It also supports H.264 video playback, 3D graphics, and streaming media in Flash 10 format.
